Term 1.3
Representation
I see this mask as an inverted censorblock which, instead of making a person anonymous by blocking the eyes, it reveals by showing only the eyes. And so revealing identity by showing only a blank canvas.

And I think for me this has a double meaning. On the one hand showing the desire not to be characterised based on anything. But on the other how we are not able to escape this fact. So I think the question is not how I want to be perceived but how I am being perceived, and for me the most prominent way this happens is as a white person. And in my experience being white means always being perceived as ’legitimate’. I am never asked to explain my existence. And in that sense, I am always recognised as a person, an individual first, and as anything else after. Where as others’ experience might be that they are being perceived as a stereotype first, and an individual after.

some process
my initial plan for this assignment was to do an interview with the parents of a friend of mine, who used to be in a punk band when they were younger.

I wanted to that because I felt like this would be an interesting way to present punkers as a group in a way that would also tie it to a more personal story.

My level of explaining was adults who are not in the punk scene themselves. So these questions were aimed at really trying to understand the motivation behind the whole punk ideology. I wanted to know what it was about and juxtapose that against a stereotypical image of punkers.

on the right page, I wrote down some points I wanted to have answered so I could build the narrative of the interview.
unfortunately, both my friend and her parents didn't have time for an interview so I had to improvise.

I decided to stick to the narrative that I had, but I wanted to gather the footage from different exciting sources I could find online. In the end I found 3 that together gave me enough material to work with.

A TED-talk with John Robb was the main source, that provided the personal view on the topic, and I could use footage of other documentaries to build around his dialogue.

Due to the late notice I didn't have the time to finish the video, but I was gonna do 3 parts to this.

The introduction would consist of images most people are familiar with when it comes to punk. Strong language, mosh pits, etc.

The middle would introduce John Robb's story with dialogue I selected from his interview, and tie his story to more footage of punkers to slowly create more understanding for his point of view.

The last part was meant to show how punk slowly shifted from the counter-culture it used to be into it's main-steam adoption. Robb talked about this as well, and some more footage of punkers from another docu would emphasise this point.
